Privacy Policy
İngilizce Cep Sözlüğüm (Android)
Last Updated: October 7, 2026
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains what data the İngilizce Cep Sözlüğüm mobile application ("the App") processes, why and how it is used, and what your rights are. The App's developer and data controller is Hakan Karateke (contact details in section 13).
2. Data Stored on Your Device
The following data is stored only on your device, in the App's private storage:
- Words, meanings, synonyms and example sentences you add
- Learning statistics, review history, spaced repetition (SRS) schedule, XP, level, streak and badge records
- App preferences, learning goal, daily goal, notification and widget settings
The dictionary, word sets, mini exams and the ÖSYM exam calendar are bundled with the App. Using them requires no internet connection, and the words you look up or study are not sent to us (see section 5 for analytics events).
3. Optional Google Account Features
The following features work only if you sign in with Google from Settings. You can use every study feature of the App without signing in.
- Google Sign-In: Your Google account name, email address, profile photo link and user ID are processed by Google Firebase Authentication.
- Cloud Backup: When you tap "Back up to Cloud", your words, statistics, review history and app preferences are stored together with your display name in Google Firebase Cloud Firestore, linked to your account. Security rules ensure that only you can access this record. Backups are created and restored only when you request it.
- Weekly Leaderboard: While you are signed in, your weekly XP score is sent to the leaderboard as you complete practice sessions. The leaderboard shows your Google display name and weekly XP score to other signed-in users. Your words, email address and other data are not included. If you do not want to appear on the leaderboard, you can sign out of your Google account in the App.
4. Sharing You Initiate
- File backup and CSV export: When you export a backup file or a CSV file of your words, the file is created on your device and sent through the Android share menu to the app you choose (e.g. Drive, email). These files never reach us.
- Sharing results and badges: The image and text you share go only to the app you choose.
- Rating the App: The App may occasionally show Google Play's in-app review dialog; your review goes directly to Google Play.
5. Analytics & Crash Reports
We use Google Firebase services to improve the App and fix errors:
- Google Firebase Analytics: collects events about App usage, such as completing a quiz or practice session (number of questions and correct answers), adding a word, adding a word set, earning a badge, completing the daily goal, enabling the widget and the exam selected for the countdown. Along with these, Firebase processes information such as the app instance ID, the device advertising ID, device model, operating system and app version, and approximate location (country/city) derived from the IP address. This data does not include your name or email address, but it can be associated with your device. The advertising ID is used for analytics only; the App shows no ads.
- Google Firebase Crashlytics: when the App crashes, collects the crash log, technical information such as device model and OS version, and a Crashlytics installation ID.
The App does not currently offer a setting to turn analytics off. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. For Google's data practices, see the Google Privacy Policy and Firebase Privacy and Security.
6. Microphone & Text-to-Speech
- Pronunciation practice: The microphone is used only in pronunciation practice, when you start listening. Your speech is converted to text by the Android speech recognition service on your device (usually Google), which may send the audio to its servers for processing under its own privacy terms. The App does not record or store audio; it only compares the recognized text with the target word on your device.
- Text-to-speech: Words are read aloud by your device's text-to-speech (TTS) engine.
7. Data Sharing
- Your data is never sold and is not shared with third parties for marketing or advertising.
- The App contains no advertising and no ad network integrations.
- Data is processed only by the Google services described in this policy (Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics, Android speech recognition), for the purpose of providing the service.
- Data may be disclosed to competent authorities where required by law.
8. Internet Connection
Word practice, quizzes, mini exams, dictionary suggestions and widgets work offline. The internet is used only for Google Sign-In, cloud backup, the leaderboard, analytics and crash reports.
9. App Permissions
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Post notifications | Study reminders, Word of the Day and exam/application deadline reminders |
| Exact alarms | Delivering reminders at the time you choose |
| Run at startup | Restoring reminders and widgets after the phone restarts |
| Microphone | Speech recognition in pronunciation practice (section 6) |
| Internet and network state | Optional account features, analytics and crash reports |
| Advertising ID | Usage analytics with Firebase Analytics (no ads are shown) |
The libraries we use also add technical permissions such as vibration, keeping the device awake and foreground service so that background work and notifications function. The biometric permissions added by the Google Sign-In library are not used by the App.
10. Data Security, Retention & Deletion
- All communication with Firebase uses encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).
- Data on your device is permanently deleted when you uninstall the App or clear its data in Android settings.
- Your cloud backup is kept until you overwrite it with a new backup or request its deletion. Leaderboard records are kept per week.
- Analytics and crash data are retained for Google Firebase's retention periods.
- To have your account, cloud backup and leaderboard records deleted, email the address in section 13 from the Google email address you signed in with; requests are fulfilled within 30 days at the latest.
11. Children's Privacy
The App is intended for teenagers and adults preparing for exams and learning English vocabulary; it is not directed at children under 13. If you become aware that personal data of a child under 13 has been processed, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Your Rights
Under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other applicable laws, you have the right to access your data, request its correction or deletion, object to its processing and receive a copy of it. Send your requests to the address in section 13. You can also export a copy of your data at any time using the App's "Back up" feature.
